The Sony World Photography Awards has named the winner of the amateur category as Arup Ghosh from India.

Ghosh beat nearly 26,000 entries to win the title along with $5,000 cash for his photograph of a barber at work.

?Magnum photography changed my vision,? said Ghosh, a physician whose passion for photography was inspired by the famous photo agency.

?The day I started to visit their website my conception about photography changed dramatically. Now I wish I was a documentary photographer. I like to photograph people, events aesthetically. I love monochrome media.?

Competition judges included high profile photographers such as Tom Stoddart, Elliott Erwitt and Rankin.

?The calibre of amateur photography is outstanding ? and in many cases reaching professional standard,? said a spokeswoman for the awards, which is in its first year.

The winner of the professional category will be announced on 24 April at a presentation ceremony to be held at the Palais des Festivals in Cannes, France.
