Sigma has revealed an ultra-telephoto zoom for sports, wildlife and action photography that’s designed specifically for use with full-frame mirrorless cameras. The new 150-600mm F5-6.3 DG DN OS forms part of its Sports range, which means it’s optimised for both high speed and high optical quality. It aims to combine the best features of the firm’s two 150-600mm zooms for DSLRs, being broadly similar in size and weight to the smaller Contemporary version, while aiming to match the high optical quality and dust- and splash-proof construction of the premium Sports optic. At £1,200, it’s also very competitively priced.

Sigma claims that the complex optical construction of 25 elements in 15 groups, including four F Low Dispersion (FLD) and two Super Low Dispersion (SLD) glass elements, should deliver professional quality results. It’s designed to combine high levels of detail with attractively blurred backgrounds, while also suppressing flare and ghosting. The L-mount version can even be used with Sigma’s 1.4x and 2x teleconverters while still supporting autofocus.

The lens comes with a robust hood, along with a bucket-type cap.

Key features include a stepping motor for fast and silent autofocus, along with a focus limiter switch to reduce hunting, and three AF-stop buttons arranged around the barrel. The built-in optical stabilisation is rated for up to 4 stops benefit, and its operation can be changed via switches on the barrel, including a panning mode. The minimum focus distance is just 58cm at the wide end, extending to 280cm at full telephoto.

Zooming can be operated using either a conventional ring, or pushing and pulling the front section of the barrel. For the first time for a Sigma lens, a three-position zoom torque switch is included, which also allows the lens to be locked at any focal length.

Along with the barrel’s dust- and splash-proof structure, the front element boasts a water and oil repellent coating. The lens measures 263.6cm in length, 109.4mm in diameter, and weighs 2100g. It comes complete with a large cylindrical hood that has a shock-resistant rubber rim, along with a tripod collar that incorporates an Arca Swiss dovetail profile allowing direct attachment to a tripod.

The Sigma 150-600mm F5-6.3 DG DN OS Sports is due on sale on 27th August for £1,199.99.
