A fresh Nikon Coolpix ?bridge? camera has emerged from the cold, boasting a monster ?24x? optical zoom lens.

The Coolpix P90 is a 12.1-million-pixel camera with a lens designed to deliver the 35mm viewing angle equivalent of a 26-624mm zoom.

Nikon bills the P90 as a ?no-compromise bridge between a compact camera and a DSLR?.

On board firepower includes a top equivalent ISO sensitivity of 6400 (at a maximum resolution of 3MP).

Close focusing is possible down to 1cm and the P90 can shoot at up to 15 frames per second, according to Nikon.

Priced £379.99 – and out on 13 March ? the camera also boasts a 3in ?vari-angle? LCD screen (230,000 pixel resolution).

Designed to be portable and compact the P90 measures 114x83x99mm and weighs around 400g (without battery and memory card).

It is powered by a rechargeable Li-ion battery.

Yesterday, severe snow thwarted Nikon UK?s plan to showcase the camera to the photographic press, along with other new Coolpix models.

Just hours before the event, the firm rushed out a hasty cancellation as the severity of the weather worsened.

The event was due to have taken place at One Aldwych in central London.
