A growing area in compact cameras over recent years has been the high-end, or premium, market. Consumers looking to get the very best in image quality and a high standard of design and finish are more willing than before to invest large amounts of cash on the very best models going.

This was evidenced in recent times with the Sony RX1 – a compact which featured a large price tag at launch but, thanks to an impressive level of image quality and premium build, was met with wide acclaim and proved popular.

This premium market is an area in which Leica is well acquainted. Leica aficionados, and luxury goods consumers in general, have long been prepared to stump up the extra cash for a the manufacturer’s high quality product and high price tag product.

That’s certainly good news in the case of the all-new Leica Q – a compact which arrives with an impressive specification but also with a price tag of nearly £3k, placing it out of reach of the casual consumer.

Although it is undeniably expensive you are getting a lot of camera for your cash. The Q incorporates a 24.2-million-pixel full-frame sensor paired with a fixed Leica SUMMILUX f/1.7 lens; a combination which looks set to deliver some stunning images.

We managed to get our hands on one of the first Leica Q models in the country ahead of today’s launch and took it out for a spin in the English countryside to see what it was capable of.

You can see the results here in our Leica Q sample image gallery, and if you want to read a bit more about what we thought of the camera you can head over to our Leica Q first look.

We’ve also put together a first look hands-on video, which you can watch below.

The Leica Q is available to order now, with a list price of £2,900.
