A former Jessops photo store is to be turned into a sandwich shop run by the takeaway food giant Subway.

The new Subway outlet will open at the former Jessops at Cowgate in Peterborough, Cambridgeshire.

However, a spokeswoman for Subway told Amateur Photographer that the move is a ?one-off?, rather than a ?strategic plan? to take over premises previously owned by further Jessops stores nationwide.

A Jessops store in Peterborough was earmarked for closure as part of the photography chain?s money-saving plan to shut down 81 stores by the end of last month.

Earlier this year Jessops dismissed as speculation a Sunday Telegraph report that Costa Coffee outlets had expressed an interest in some Jessops stores.

The Jessops closures formed part of a strategic review, details of which were announced in June. They represented a quarter of the company?s stores.

Subway is a US-based fast food chain which plans to double the number of its UK outlets within three years – bringing the total to more than 2,000 by 2010.

Jessops had yet to issue a comment at the time of writing.
