High street camera chain Jacobs has closed its store in Sheffield, South Yorkshire, Amateur Photographer (AP) has learned.

However, the reason for the closure is not clear.

Jacobs confirmed to AP that the Sheffield store has closed but declined to comment citing ‘legal issues’.

AP understands that Jacobs is searching for potential new premises in the area following the closure of the Rockingham Gate store a few weeks ago.

The move appears to have taken regular customers by surprise.

‘I returned from my holidays with rolls of film to develop – fond memories of people and places from my travel to Greece,’ said AP reader Pavlos Lazarou who told us he was ‘shocked and deeply saddened’ by the news.

Established more than 70 years ago Jacobs now operates 17 stores across Britain, with its head office in Leicester.

The firm has told us that it will not be making a formal announcement on the matter.
