‘Historic’ photographs to fetch princely sum
March 7, 2008
A collection that includes historic 19th century photographs of Indian princes is expected to fetch thousands of pounds at an auction in London next month.
The archive contains 420 pictures, dating from the 1850s to the 1940s and ranging in price from £100-15,000.
The gems include images of adjacent countries and are expected to fetch a total of £300,000.
The photos, many large and hand-coloured, record the lives of Indians and of Europeans in India, ?their dress, trades and achievements?, according to the auction house.
The collection also includes an album of Kashmir views.
The treasures belonged to the late businessman Kanwardip Gujral.
The auction, India in Photography: Sale of the Collection of Kanwardip Gujral, takes place at Bonhams, 101 New Bond Street, London on 9 April. It starts at 11am.
