Photography students from Poland have scooped two out of the top three spots, including overall winner, in a European Union (EU) competition called Breaking Stereotypes.

Krzysztof Goluch fought off 600 other entries from across the EU with a picture of an ageing man in a wheelchair facing a flight of stairs.

Judges said: ?At first glance the winning photograph evokes a sense of deep solitude and helplessness. It is this rawness and emptiness that draws the viewer to the image.?

German student Nora Krauss claimed second place.

Maja Kurant ? also from Poland ? came in third with a mosaic of photographs.

The top three winners share the ?9,000 prize.

The contest was part of the EU?s information campaign, ?For Diversity Against Discrimination?.
