World Famous Harry Benson puts himself up for auction to help injured colleague
Harry Benson, arguably Scotland’s most celebrated photographer, has agreed to have lunch with the highest bidder in a unique fundraising auction for photographer, Derek Blair.
The Scot, who famously photographed The Beatles as they greeted their American fans for the first time, is taking part in the auction in a bid to raise much-needed cash for Blair, who was seriously injured in a car crash last year.
The Scottish Press Photographers Association (SPPA) is arranging the auction. And the amazing prize is an all expenses paid lunch at the exclusive, The Rogano restaurant in Glasgow.
Benson, whose work has featured on the front of Time, People and Vanity Fair agreed to put himself under the hammer to help out his fellow Scot.
The photographer said he was shocked to hear the news about SPPA member Blair. The pair met three years ago when Blair photographed Benson for a Daily Record feature in New York, before Blair embarked on his own freelance career.
Speaking about Blair’s accident, Harry said : ‘I’m very upset to hear about Derek and pass on my warmest wishes.’ On the auction to raise funds he added, ‘I would be delighted to take the winner to lunch next time I’m home.’
Both photographers forged illustrious careers based on US presidents, with Benson having snapped every one since Eisenhower and Blair covering the election of Barack Obama for the Telegraph Group.
The auction follows recent fundraising events, including a charity golf day and raffle in April that raised over £ 1600 to help support Derek.
A number of other items will be auctioned over the coming weeks and months to help support Derek.
The auction will remain open until 11.59pm on Friday, June 17 and bids can be registered by going to www.thesppa.org.
