As both Canon and Nikon use these cards, I have to ask whether original XQD card readers also work with the new CFExpress cards, or do you need to acquire "upgraded " new ones.

Excellent question, to which I don't have an answer. However, since the earliest XQD readers can't read the latest XQD cards I would say that the answer is probably no. As I am sure you know, XQD readers aren't cheap and, if the price of CFExpress cards is anything to go by, suitable readers will be even more expensive.
