I would have thought “damp squib” was more appropriate.

Perhaps it could be the Red and Blue Minstrel show, with Sacha Cohen reviving Ali G as the presenter...
Peak time programmes get worse every year, so this must be a contender.

Being as all the contestants were 'Amateur' sportsmen and sportswomen (back in the day when it meant it wasn't your main living) I doubt they'd be able to afford today's sports-celebs

Remake probably isn't the right word but I enjoyed Last Man Standing as a follow up after Home Improvement. Same recipe but different ingredients, mostly.

There were some huge names in sport who participated in the 70s & 80s and definitely not amateurs. James Hunt, Jody Schekter, George Best, Emlyn Hughes all participated, as did many sportsmen who were at the top of their game.

Perhaps I'm going to hell, but I thought this was funny when I was a kid!

I have in my memory another star (who I thought was Brian Jacks) getting cocky at the end and slowing down as he thought he won and was then beaten by his opponent. Have I made that up?

Probably why it would be difficult to get sports teams to release their biggest names to participate if they made it. I've yet to meet a retired sportsman who isn't still extremely fit and highly competitive (you just need to see them on Strictly).
