    Right now Dave's mum.

I called her today and got her answerphone so I left a message but she didn't call back and I was about to call his brother when his SIL messaged me to say she was back in hospital after a fall. So I called her, she's just had heart surgery, she's 80+, has various other things wrong her and has been chronically dizzy for years but now they're trying to sort out her medication she's been more dizzy ever since. I know she's had a couple of falls but she "doesnae want to be a bother" but this time she fell at 9pm on Thursday and was stuck there until 4am Friday when she managed to get to a phone to call an ambulance.

I said what she really needs is one of those pendants that when you fall you press a button and it notifies the control centre and they come round help you up, make sure you're okay etc.

    Reply "But they're £10 a month!"

I told her I'd happily pay it (and I am sure Adam would go halves with me) for our peace of mind never mind hers and she says she won't hear of us paying for it but she won't pay for it herself (btw before you think how sad it is a pensioner can't afford it she can, she likes to play the "poor widow woman" but she'll moan about having to pay the gardener and in the next breath tell me how she's transferred £50k to an account with a better rate of interest!)

I just stopped short of informing her at work I have typed reports on more than a few cases where an elderly person (Never suggest she is of course!) has fallen and been on the floor for ages (She moved from where she knew everyone to a 3-bedroomed bungalow because it's in the best part of town- without either of them knowing the other one did both her sons called her "Hyacinth Bouquet" she even goes shopping in the next town because the people she used to know are as she puts it "awful common" and now although she is proud her neighbours include a solicitor, a retired judge, a surgeon, an accountant etc I get the feeling especially as she is housebound anyway apart from her dial and ride to go shopping, which hasn't happened recently due to covid-19 if she had a fall no-one would know) and I was typing their post-mortem reports

    Maybe I should!

I am sure you are right about JL, they couldn't do anything to prevent INTU's insolvency and some had been seeing that on the cards for a while. A poorly managed company that thought owning more shopping centres would bring in more money, not taking account of the increased outgoings, but that is speculation nobody is doing well owning shopping centres at the moment.

I am equally sure that some companies will have taken the opportunity to furlough staff knowing full well that they weren't in any state to survive. The real losers are the employees.

Not really. Without the furlough, they would have been unemployed earlier, with no income in these cases.

It's the companies that have taken the money and not paid the workers, or made them work at the same time, or otherwise committed fraud that really annoy me. Not many, but guilty as hell.

I agree, though some of those furloughed and then made redundant might have started looking for other job earlier. Obviously we can never know what difference that may have made.

I really hope there aren't many that took the money and didn't pay the workers!

I don't think there are many, but there are certainly some. I suspect they will be caught up with at some point - my understanding is that HMRC are on the case, though.

British Gas...here we are 4 days after the guy read the meter and it is still not sorted out

Finally after spending most of my lunch break on the phone I get to speak to someone and I had to resort to asking for the complaints department.

The guy did not send the meter readings to them, in fact, he was there to fit a smart meter and not read the meters and she says he didn't read them and no I cannot have compensation because he came to install the meter so he did his bit even though he couldn't install it even though I told the brain dead moron there was a problem in the first place!!

Anyway she called the engineer and he says he gave me the readings when he did no such thing, So they won't refund me anything until the meters are read. She has emailed him and he is offering to come round and read the meters later today or tomorrow and will email the readings directly to her for her to sort out. Luckily my boss is okay with me going early and now I am waiting for the call back to find out when he can do it!

You don't have the nickname "Lucky" by any chance do you Lesley?

As Rincewind said "Luck" is my middle name mind you my first name is "Bad"

I am home waiting on the guy to come and read the meters. She says she will call me back at 4.50 before she finishes to see what is happening, I am furious especially about the compensation issue, she says he came to fit a smart meter so they have kept their end of the bargain so I am not entitled apparently when I told moron 1 there had been a problem with the space and she said "We have newer models" I am supposed to have somehow known the "newer" models still wouldn't have fitted and said "no" although this should have led to me not getting an appointment to get my meters read because that engineer doesn't read meters except he said he did when she spoke to him and I saw him do it but he then didn't upload the readings to my account or this would have all been sorted out by Sunday at the latest. Now if she does get the readings by 4.50 assuming I am due a refund (and one of the reasons I checked is last year in February I was over £200 in credit after the meters were read but when it got to July because they'd switched to estimates again I ended up getting £34 back!) I will have it in my account probably tomorrow if he doesn't come until tomorrow then Thursday maybe

    I think I should get something for;
    1. Spending 4 hours on the phone luckily I get unlimited calls on my phone contract but if I didn't it would have cost me a fortune
    2. Dealing with that rude moron in the first place she just made it clear she wanted to get me off the phone
    3. Being lied to more than once
    4. Having to waste at least a day and a half of my annual leave possibly more, time I could gave spent doing something more interested and/or relaxing
    5. Having to come back to my flat which is bloody hot right now when I could have been sitting under the air con at work
    6. Having to grovel to the boss to get the time off on both counts so far
    7. Not having money in my account (which if things had gone how the first moron said they would I would have the money now) so I could escape the heat in my flat by going to the Bells
    And above all
    8. Having to listen to the worse hold music ever for 45 minutes on several occasions

And right now he's got 22 minutes to come and read the meters before she calls me and I have to say he's not here yet and have to let my boss know the odds are I might need the morning off assuming he does come tomorrow!

No sign of the meter reader and no call back from the complaints person
