Okay people, we need to talk. It looks as though there's still a need to clarify exactly what the Exhibition Lounge is for, because some are still treating it much the same as the Appraisal Gallery and giving their criticisms of the posted work.

As soon as the original Gallery forum was created it became something like the internet equivalent of Mike Maloney's regular picture criticism feature in AP, only with anyone who wanted to taking on the role of MM. But not everyone is looking for advice about what they 'ought' to have done differently, or about whether something 'works' or not in the opinion of others. In the final analysis these things may be entirely a matter of personal preference, and so not really relevant to anyone other than the particular observer. The magazine reflects this by also featuring portfolio pages for readers pictures, which work like more traditional exhibition space, where those who simply wish to share their finished works with others can do so (subject to editorial acceptance, of course), and readers can enjoy them or turn the page and move on as they wish.

The Exhibition Lounge here on the forum is meant to serve a similar purpose - people posting in it are not looking for advice or criticism - they know how they want their pictures to be, and have made their decisions. Forum members should respect that by reserving their criticisms for pictures in the Appraisal Gallery.

Posters might even be showing some picture they know is a load of dingos' kidneys, but the purpose of the post may be something completely unrelated to the photographic 'quality' of the image. In this vein, the Exhibition Lounge is also meant to be a lounge - that is, it represents a picture orientated version of the main Lounge forum. Discussions are welcome. It's the right place, for example, to chat about something like composition, or lighting techniques, say, which might be illustrated by pictures, or other things that might naturally arise from some posted picture.

    So, here's the bottom line:

Forum members who want criticism (or 'appraisal') of their pictures should not post them in the Exhibition Lounge, but in the Appraisal Gallery. It is the responsibility of the poster to decide which is the appropriate forum for their pictures. Equally, those responding to threads should recognise that members posting images to the Exhibition Lounge are not looking for critique.

So, responses in the Exhibition Lounge which stray too far (in the opinion of the moderators) into picture criticism may be deleted or edited as appropriate. A thread may, at the request of the original poster be moved en bloc from the Exhibition Lounge to the Appraisal Gallery. Movement the other way may also be possible in some exceptional cases.
