Just before 10pm last night both my wife and I felt a distinct tremor*, but there's nothing listed on the relevant websites. What else might have caused it?

*Having both lived in areas with frequent tremors and earthquakes we're pretty familiar with the sensation.

Well, I was woken up by the big explosion near Luton many moons ago, that was quite a different experience! I can only imagine your explosion, but rather wish I hadn't...

According to BGS "Earthquakes are almost completely absent from eastern Scotland".
Do young chaps flying fast jets for the RAF ever take naughty liberties?

Usually just for the tattoo. There was no associated noise which could help identify the source of the shaking. Really is a mystery.

Might have been a collapse after all the rain?

Not sure that would cause the oscillation we felt, but it could be something like that. There are uncharted mineshafts nearby; one was discovered a few months back and is currently being capped about 500m away.

Edit to add, these are mineshafts that go back to the middle ages, no-one knows the full extent of them.
