if I could think of any good cinnamons to replace the bog standard words they'd used.

I did try pointing out that it was more important that their meaning was clear than to use fancy vocabulary but they repeatedly told me that they wanted more cinnamons.

I may be quietly chuckling to myself for some time.

I'm just having a cup of tea and now I want a cinnamon roll.

Did you say “cumin to my office and talk about it”?

Very good! Excellent example of phonetic spelling!

I have a feeling that we had to have a thesaurus as well as a dictionary on our desks at secondary school but that's 55 years ago now. The trick is to use both!

In a student's hands a thesaurus tends to encourage pretentious writing.

Indeed. I once had to make gentle suggestions to one student who had used a thesaurus to create their CV. The problem comes from a lack of understanding of tone, and from an inability to understand that just because a word means basically the same thing, context is still key. So 'magnificent' could be an alternate word for 'great' but 'magnificent communication skills' is taking blowing your own trumpet to the next level and beyond!

That was a missed opportunity on my behalf wasn't it?! I very nearly did tell them that doing so might spice things up a bit but wasn't sure they'd think I was taking the mickey or not!

That might be seen as trying to curry flavour.

I recall CVs/cover letters claiming 'a wealth', 'vast', and 'extensive' experience across the hospitality sector. Usually defined as less than a month in a waiter role, nothing more.

Better than rubbing salt in an open wound.

To be fair they're used to applying for jobs offering "generous renumeration".

We were quite clear that it was minimum wage.

Auditors? Accountancy? MP's expenses claimant secretary? Cooking the books?

The worst experience I ever had with a customer was a drinks reception when the client deliberately unbalanced the tray of champagne I was holding so that it tipped all the glasses onto me soaking me whilst she sneered at me. The real reason she was upset was because my boss had forgotten to order 8 agency staff, so we were royally screwed.

It's also remuneration, not renumeration! Hey-ho!

One of these occassions where the only reasonable course of action is to retire to the next room and suck it up? Seriously I have never had to haud my wheest quite that badly.
