Saying: Beauty is in the eye of the beholder....

...(according to some Internet dictionary) means that not all people have the same opinions about what is attractive.

...and it looks like the meaning of a set of coloured pixels printed on a sheet of white photographic paper, as well, is in the eye of the beholder. :) ...

...this could mean that perception must include some interpretation of sense data, and that there isn't a unique objective view of reality... and (after seeing some photos in Mike Maloney's Star Picture section of AP after mine has been rejected) that there isn't such a thing as an expert on quality of photographs (in a broader sense of the word, including aesthetics, technical quality, etc.). :)

Very largely, yes. That's why your "HiFi Photography" thing doesn't mean anything, Robert. Technical quality can largely be defined and measured, but there's no way of measuring aesthetics (thankfully!) - and that certainly includes colour.

It is possible to measure colour with great accuracy but that doesn't mean that any two people see the measured colour in the same way. On some colour vision charts, I can see the "correct" number and the "incorrect" number given a bit of time, which obviously isn't allowed in a "Live" test.
