    Try this at home:

Find the value of 'A' and the value of 'B'

    Pentax K10D minus Samsung = A

    Samsung GX10 minus Pentax = B

CLUE: The value of each is less than 1.

    Bonus section:

Which has the largest value 'A' or 'B'?

Are you surprised by your answer?

Well yes, perhaps the whole is greater than the sum of the parts, although one could say that Pentax, at its size and with its difficulty in funding R & D, needs Samsung badly. But surely the point is that they need each-other because they have chosen to use each-other. Were Pentax to be taken over by say Siemens, it would need Samsung not at all and Samsung would need to spend more time and money on R & D, and indeed on understanding the DSLR market, than it would want to spend. They are interdependent but also independent; but Pentax is the only one that is actually vulnerable at present.
