    Hi Folks,
The not-quite-father-in-law recently gave me his old Spotmatic II.
It's in lovely condition, but unfortunately he's a bit ham-fisted, and has managed to damage the gearing to the film uptake spool. With no film in, the spindle appears to work correctly, but with film, it is too weak to tension the film.
Is this a common problem with these cameras, and can any of you RECOMMEND a repairer. There are several listed in the back of AP and other magazines, but I have no experience of them.
I took it into my local camera shop, but the chap who does their repairs is retired and has no access to parts (although he graciousely offered to take if off my hands for spares for £12.00!)
Have any of you any idea of a reasonable price for such a repair, I would like to use the camera as I have several lenses that will fit it from my Chinon, but on the other hand, I don't want my leg lifting with a repair bill of more than the cost of a new camera.
    Thanks in anticipation,
    Jo.

Also if you join the pentax club (www.pentaxmagazine.co.uk) you get 20% off all repairs at Pentax UK.

"Pentax User members receive 20% discount on the cost of servicing Pentax equipment sent direct to Pentax UK.

This discount is applied before VAT and postage charges are added.

This discount is only given if a special form (you can download and print it here, or obtain it from the Pentax User office) is enclosed with the equipment when it is sent for servicing and is only applicable when the equipment is sent direct to the Pentax Service Division by a Pentax User Club member. You can make a personal visit to Pentax House if this is more convenient than sending the equipment by post. The Service Division is open 9am - 5pm Mondays to Fridays.

Did you do anything about this yet?

Did you choose to send to Pentax?

Only reason I ask is that I have heard 2 horror stories from people using them in the last 2 months. I post their emails for your information as relies to this one.

    Bad experience 1

    hi

I have used Pentax cameras for 25 years. In July this year I sent my immaculate and recently purchased Pentax LX to Pentax UK to repair a loose DoF button. It was returned to me in with a large dent on the prism, which could only have resulted from a very forceful impact and paint scraped back to the metal from all the edges. The packaging in which it was posted was in pristine condition (I still have it) and the camera clearly had been in this damaged condition when it was packed by the Pentax UK repair department.

While the damage could be cosmetically repaired, it is difficult to asses what longer-term malfunctions might ensue from a blow of this severity. So, after an exchange of correspondence with Mr Brian Light, Director at Pentax UK I received a letter from their Mr Jetha apologising and stating that Pentax UK would replace my camera with another of comparable quality to its pre-damage condition (mint-).

I had returned my camera to Pentax to enable their assessment. I was therefore shocked to receive a further letter from them saying that they had repaired my camera and were returning it to me. I had previously specifically and repeatedly refused my consent to this procedure, in writing. The camera duly arrived in the post, with the strap and its attachment clips missing.

I wrote to Pentax, with copies to all directors and relevant personnel, to complain about this, and to request the return of my carrying strap and its attachment clips, which they promised to do by phone and in a letter, weeks ago, but which have still not been returned. I have received no reply at all to my complaint except a note denying any and all responsibility. Further letters have received no reply. A post repair valuation of my camera shows that it has lost £700 in value due to its damage history. The loss of the strap clips means I cannot carry it outside.

I mentioned this to my local dealer, Jessops of Lancaster and was amazed to learn that a camera they had sent to Pentax UK recently had also been returned with a dent in the lens, again clearly the result of a heavy impact. They had also received no satisfaction from Pentax and have provided documentary evidence to this effect.

I am writing to discover if other customers of the Pentax UK repair department have experienced similar difficulties. I have copies of all correspondence and pictures of the damage.

    Bad experience 2

I'm sorry to learn of the dreadful service you received from Pentax UK. I'm afraid my story is no better. Pentax UK had my recently serviced LX in for a very specific repair, they said their repair involved servicing again as that's how they do it (dismantle and check all components and re-assemble) the camera was returned three weeks later and I immediately noticed that the fault was still present, I sent the camera back the same day. They kept it another two weeks and returned it... it was still faulty. I spoke to your Mr Jetha and asked for a refund as I had been clear and specific in my repair request. Mr Jetha argued the toss finally saying that the camera was working to specification and he'd send me a letter to say so, he then more or less told me to go away. At this point I made the decision to pay a visit.

I duly turned up with the camera and within seconds had displayed the fault to the sullen Mr Jetha. He fiddled with the camera and observed the fault for himself. He then muttered about sending the camera to Pentax Europe and this is what he did. Three weeks later I'm still waiting.

Mr Jetha never once apologised. He'd had the camera twice and was finally denying that there was any fault. I went to the considerable trouble of visiting and within seconds it was plain that he was wrong but he said nothing, no apology, no simple courtesy.

One final point that sums it up for me. When leaving the camera I wanted to remove the strap so I asked for a screwdriver to push the tabs on the LX fasteners. Mr Jetha (the Technical Supervisor remember) couldn't lay hands on a screwdriver so returned with a pair of sharp pointed tweezers - one slip and you either stab your fingers or scratch the camera. A pitiful and disappointing display.
