V4 firmware. I've installed and tested ... all okay on mine. Not fully gone through the menu but I there is now an OFF setting for the high ISO NR - the lack of which has caused a lot of controversy
Click on V4 (above) for the download. Yes there are quite dramatic improvements to high ISO rendition and also 2EV bracketing ... and other stuff not yet quantified. On other forums some are calling it an upgrade rather than an update I don't know about that - but anyway it seems quite a big step forwards.
heres how. http://tinyurl.com/A700-Firmware-v4 I know it says version 3 in the text but it is the same for v4
Smearing and water-colour effects caused by high ISO noise suppression. Plus some just didn't like the fact that the NR couldn't be turned OFF only to LOW.
I came to update my firmware by copying the (DSCA700.APP) file across the the root directory of my CF card, but all there is is one file called SONYCF.IND which is 0kb. Can anyone help?
Got it sorted.........I ran the prog first then copied the file across to the cf card, instead of doing it the correct way..............DOH
Glad you're up and running with V4 now. I've had a chance now to test it out and quite frankly its more of a make-over than a simple version upgrade. So much has been improved not just high ISO noise - but across the board of image quality. Just one example is the noise at lower ISO - 800 is now very nearly as clean as 400 was!
Just one more question Rog. Where did you get the update from as I can't seem to find it on the Sony site?
A700 is now updated to v4 and I am seriously impressed. Now I can shoot higher ISOs and use Noise Ninja properly. I seriously thought that the effect caused by the camera's noise reduction system was caused by the noise itself! It was definitely a case of the cure being worse than the disease. I am now a very happy camper!
