It's not fair!

It's not fair, Stouteys off out to the opera, Slimey is probably hob-nobbing it with the jet set on his yacht in monte carlo harbour, Fangs is probably at a Vampire convention in Transylvania and here am I stuck at home on a Saturday night wondering whether to have sauce on me fish fingers or not! Thats as exciting as it gets for me. I know, I'll look up my little black book and see what the forum lovelies are up to tonight. Right first off, Janice, nah. She has too expensive tastes. A fish supper and a tin of lager would be no good to her. Diane, nah, by the time I'd get a flight out to the USA I would be too jet lagged to do anything. What about Josie, nah, she's fitting that new head gasket to a Mondeo tonight. Sally, nah, she's off lurking in a hide somewhere trying to sneak up on some unsuspecting ducks!
Oh well, I guess it's just going to have to be ketchup on me fish fingers after all! Sigh!

    Will,

Diane's away out to-night socialising, she's got a life unlike us sados', the rest of the ladies I can't comment about, my own good lady is out on a girls night out, so I'm left here on my own had the microwave meal, thinking about getting a cold one out the fridge and starting "Photoshop 6 for dummies", that I bought to-day. I'm determined to learn/get to grips with this scanning/manipulation lark so that when I put an image on the gallery I know it's as good as it possibly can, and any criticism will be only down to the photography.

    Enjoy your 'saucy fingers'

I feel so sorry for you poor buggers, Monte is lovely at this time of the year,

    Slimey.

P.S. If only Claudia would stop making physical demands.

Yes indeed Ron. I owe you an apology for unfairly critising your shots for what I thought was camera shake when in fact it was down to the scanning process. Should have known you wouldn't make a fundamental mistake like that. What kind of "hardware" are you using to scan your pictures? I have often wondered if it would be worth having your pictures scanned to CD professionaly. Would the quality be up to scratch then? Still, I would prefer to do it myself but you need the knowhow. Can I read over your shoulder?

What's "web standard" Tim? Sounds like another word for "crappy low resolution" to me?

He's been on the Viagra again! Leave him alone Claudia! He's got a dodgy ticker. Go for a young virile stud muffin like me that can take the punishment!

Ok, so it's a big file but what resolution do they scan the piccies at or don't they tell you that? Does 1.5mb equate to a very high resolution scan or is it just an uncompressed file format?

Hardly big mate. The blurb in Joe's price list gives 3 different scan levels. The biggest (suitable for up to A3 output) is up to 72Mb!!

I'd have to stick the disc in to find out more stuff.

    Get out and get shooting!!

    Will,

apolagies unnecessary, I jumped the gun in trying to run before I could crawl, (sometimes I'm just a wee bit to clever for my own good, or I think I am). You were quite right in being critical, because, I expect high standards from myself and as well as letting myself down I let you guys down in exhibitting something that should have been much much better, Sorry! so in fact Will, it is me who should apolagise, for displaying substandard images.
At least I now have a new technical challenge to get to grips with, but beware because I'm liable to be asking a lot of 'daft' questions to try and make sense of this scanning lark.
As to kit Will, I, like Slimey got myself an Epson Perfection 1650 Photo, with the bundled Photoshop Elements software and as I've mentioned elsewhere, if I go MF, there is a 1640 with the 5*4 scanning hood that I might be able to borrow.

Hells bells! 72mb! Now THAT must be a high quality scan! I had no idea that high quality scans resulted in such large file sizes. All I ever use is my tatty old flatbed and save the files as JPGS. so they are always tiny by comparison. Will have to be carefull then if I ever get my piccies scanned to CD to be sure and specify the "high quality" scans. After all, whats the point of getting low quality stuff, I can get that off my old flatbed.

"Elements" is supposed to be a cut down and more "user friendly" version of the full Photoshop package but I always find any of those photo editing packages daunting because there is just so much to them. I suppose it is a matter of just sticking with it and becoming familiar with all the controls. Have you thought about buying the optional 5x4" transparency lid for the 1650? I reckon scanning 35mm on any flatbed is a waste of time because the resolution just isn't high enough but with medium format the size of the negative compensates for any shortfall in the scanning process and the quality can be truly excellent. Do you have a Medium Format camera? I would heartily recommend you get one if you don't. It will open up a whole new world quality wise to you.

Well all I can say is that you're all lucky buggers, I'd kill to be able to sit at home and ponder over what sauce to have on my fish fingers. Some of us are incarcerated in hospital looking after the mentally ill all night long...18 lives in my hands and all I can think about is what the weather will be like on Monday, whether I will be presented with the opportunity to write a pulitzer prize winning piece of material and be able to take the photos to accompany it...ah thank god for medication...them you undersatnd not me...well not yet:)
So come on then give me some chat or something...I am very bored...

Yep, pricey ain't it. Maybe for the odd one off special film though. Will just have to get some decent scanning hardware if I am ever going to make a job of it it seems.
