75 years ago Hermann Goring was asked at the Nuremberg trial how the Germans had been able to accept all this.
He replied: "It's very easy and it has nothing to do with Nazism; it has to do with human nature. You can do it in a Nazi, socialist, communist, monarchy or democracy regime: the only thing a government needs to turn people into slaves is fear. If you can find something to scare them you can make them do whatever you want."

    See any similarities

The difference surely was that he was referring to fear of upsetting government/authority, not living in fear of what they might idiotically screw up next?

    There's a difference?

In practical terms yes. If they (UK gov) were more competent in their evilness we'd be living in a far far worse country.

Not at all. As a person at real risk and one of 20,000 Myeloma patients in the UK, Covid 19 presents a real and established risk of death since most suffering from Myeloma, or Bone Marrow Cancer as it's sometimes known, die of respiratory tract infection. I really can't talk for the millions of others at real risk of Covid. I contracted Viral Pneumonia by spending just four hours inspecting a care home in late 2015, and almost died in a coma on ECMO . This risks are real, flu kills but we have a vaccine, Covid 19 kills, but we have no vaccine.

It's pretty sad when the best that can be said of a government is that they're incompetent at being evil. :(

It’s not so much this government that’s incompetent and / or evil but the f**kwits that inhabit Facebook and the streets espousing this:

    https://www.theguardian.com/world/2020/sep/20/the-qanon-conspiracy

oh yes, and then there’s David Icke (but let’s not go there).......

    Take care,
    Mike

Been aware of that for some time although I did read it this morning. I actually know a few people on the edges of it. They are totally convinced. It is growing quite rapidly in the uk. I think the sooner trump is defeated and the virus contained the better. Neither are helping the situation.

Neither precludes the other, unfortunately. When the Prime Mobster's Minister's chief bully boy advisor breaks the rules in a particularly public manner the signal sent is "this is all a lie". It's then hardly a surprise when the hard of thinking crawl out of turd space* with their stupid theories and claims.

(* Yes: that is a reference to the Babylon 5 film)

I know someone well into it. They believe that over and above the mainstream media. My wife still sees her (not as much as she used to) and speaks on the phone, but I haven't spoken to her properly in months. We have all grown so far apart (as she has from her sister too). It is like a cult.

.....but the deluded have always been with us, from the flat-earthers through the tribesmen who thought wearing an amulet would render them invincible against the guns of incoming colonist armies to those who subscribe to religions - any of them.

    Take care,
    Mike

I've always held the view that there's nothing wrong with religion - provided you practice it in private and wash your hands carefully when you're finished.

Our friend has really bought into that conspiracy and went on one of these "save our children" marches. I read that story this morning and my wife was considering forwarding her the link, but TBH it would finish the friendship off for good if she did.

I never thought that I would ever accuse you of being naive.
Religion might well be a matter of how one privately worships your own God or Gods. That fallacy is prevalent in post enlightenment societies.
Some religions are far more than that. The religion is a whole culture. It includes law. Law is not made by elected politicians. Some law is fundamental to the religion. Some law is refined by religious scholars based on ancient texts. Religious societies are not democratic. Religious societies are theocracies. I believe them to be evil. As soon as law is made by religionites then democracy is dead.
I had better not go further. It's not PC to do so.
