Think how you'd feel if you had bought the 400 F2.8 !

I’d probably feel exactly the same.
I’m trying to think what the hell I need a 100-400 & 7d for?? I don’t do birds, wildlife, it’s too damn big to take on family days out. The lens is amazing

Christ knows what I’ll do now!!

Well you have a few months before you need to consider bribery.

The moral here is don't spend a lot on a lens for just one purpose

My Panasonic 100-400 is used for any number of subjects and on M43 its effective magnification is 200-800!

Perhaps your son is becoming more intellectually mature than his father.

I will buy the lens from you (probably breaks a forum rule).

He may take up another sport that requires you to use a similar set up or perhaps he will take up photography.

Let him be, they need to make up their own minds.

But the quip buying a lens for just one purpose was annoying because I’ve used the same set up for the past 4yrs and this year my son was due to play on a larger pitch. My 70-300L struggled last year. The 100-400 would have brought the action closer plus had the ability to accept a teleconverter whereas the 70-300 does not. I didn’t buy it on a whim, I’ve waited until I actually needed it. Clearly I never considered he may quit. I think it’s partly due to the fact the poor sod has been shut in for the past 3 months, no sports, no school...nothing!

I agree. He has no inkling that it’s completely thrown me. As for the lens (and all the other gear)
I won’t be selling it, sorry
I’m sure it will see some use at some point. There’s actually a photography club not 50yds from where I live. So who knows.

Well, with that lens you will be able to get some close up shots of it!
