I like to be loyal to my Minolta. Does that sound stupid?
not at all,i had a minolta x300 for about 7 years, had to go for Af in the end due to poor eyesight. It was a great little camera.

I have borrowed a friends Dynax 7000i for a couple of months. I hope this will give me some idea as to whether I want/need an AF camera, with all it's bells and whistles.

Good idea, Nikki. The 7000i is a very old camera now (in AF terms), so modern cameras do focus faster - but do you need it?

Good thinking Nikki, At least you'll have the chance to try out AF and some of the other 'bells and whistles', although Nick (inflatable) is right in saying that the 7000 is getting a bit long in the tooth, and the performance of the latest Dynax's have gone way beyond what the 7000 could provide.
Enjoy trying out AF at least you'll find out if it is for you or not and could potentially save you buying a camera that you'd end up disliking.

This is why I would like an AF system - for all those things that move faster than my reactions. If I did buy the Dynax 5 would I be able to buy a a macro lens that still worked in AF mode?

I'm growing increasingly curious about the Dynax 5 as well. I'm a bit snobby I think, because I've been lucky enough to buy Olympus/Zuiko gear when they were still cheap; also I've got a Rollei with a Tessar and my Minox lens is much better than I ever imagined it would be.

But I have very tiny hands, 15 cm from base of palm to top of middle finger, and the Dynax looks so easy to hold. How are Minolta's optics? Why is there so little regard of Minolta compared to Canon, Nikon, Contax, etc (and yes of course Leica, but people don't seem buy the SLRs in great number). Love to hear opinions from someone who owns several makes about Minolta's lens quality....

I should be studying....

i would imagine you would be able to get a macro lens and still use AF,cosina do one for about £150 so do vivitar(I want one for my EOS) .Of course if youre going in close (true macro or thereabouts) you can forget AF,you'll be better off using MF.

Lisa,

Although a dedicated Minolta owner, what I perceive is that, with modern lens design and technology there is little difference between the marques in terms of AF lenses, in fact what you will probably find between the different makes, is that each has its own particular top class lenses which out perform their rivals equivalents. As regards to Minolta not being up there with the likes of Leica, Contax, Canon and Nikon, this is partly down to reputation built up over a number of years especially in the UK and the fact that, Minolta did not market the brand as widely as the likes of Nikon and Canon, elsewhere in the world the story is different where Minolta are as well known as the rest of the AF manufacturers.
It is also perceived that most of the Photography Mags in the UK tend to have a bias towards one or other of the two marques (Canon & Nikon), which tends to reflect, the system which is owned or favoured by the magazine reveiwer(s)
I suppose a more ballanced opinion is the European TIPA awards which take into account the findings of a large number of photography magazines from acros Europe who for the last two years have voted Minolta's Dynax 7 (last year) and the Dynax 5 this year as SLR camera of the year, so they must be getting something right.

Yea,minolta keep on winning Camera of the Year, and my old camera, the X300,was best in its class.Thery have said that they dont market themselves for professionalls, but have you seen their XM/KM models, like wow, gorgeous!

I don't own a Minolta, but tests show their lenses to be at least as good as Canons and thus better than Nikons.. OK, they're all broadly on a par.
