First coronavirus cases confirmed in UK

Two people have tested positive for coronavirus in the UK, the chief medical officer for England has announced.

They are both members of the same family and are receiving specialist NHS care.

No more details are being released about their identity or where they are being treated.

A couple of days ago I was reading about this online, and there was something about how effective the masks were.
I thought I'd take a look to see what sort of masks people were buying, which led to me going to one site, which stated that they had been inundated by orders for protective gear. It sold everything from those surgical masks to the full noddy suits.
Interesting to see how things go with this - it does have the potential to be extremely bad, but it does depend on how quickly people can be quarantined.

As plans for this sort of thing have been in placed since at least the cold-war (bio/chem weapons) there shouldn't really be an issue with dealing with things in the UK, but then again, the way services have been cut back things could go tits up.

I sneezed today whilst in the hairdressers with my wife - there was some perfume or other that got up my snoz. We were talking about the bug, and the hairdresser asked me if I had a cold - I said yes, and I had had a Chinese meal:eek:

As I write, the razor wire is being uncoiled round the house and ravenous hounds being released. But I don't wish that to imply I have any lack of faith in the powers that be to protect us.

I have a cold. My wife isn't taking my concerns seriously though. I just hope it is actually coronavirus and not man flu.

    it has come
    It will spread
    It will do its worst
    it will burn itself out.
The NHS and other services will have a smaller population to look after for a decade or two.

These situations are always self correcting.

We will have to deal with the aftermath of Brexit for far longer.

Why has the USA (trump) not banned the import of the Chinese Corona virus?
Or at least put a stringent tariff on it?
After all he has banned Huawei products and grounded all Chinese Drones in the USA.
When it comes to China, His paranoia knows no bounds, and seems to be equally infectious amongst republicans.
I expect him to declare it biological warfare very soon.

Why has the USA (trump) not banned the import of the Chinese Corona virus?

Because he needs cultures to dip cruise missile warheads in. Latest plan to wipe out nasties in Iran.

Just in case the Coronavirus isn't enough to worry about, this week's New Scientist magazine contains an article about a (soon to be trialled) Anti-Viral cream which boosts the skin's immune response to Mosquito bites and might also help fight other diseases such as Zika. :)

Not too sure about applying to my face, a drug also used to treat Genital Warts!!

My little sister is worried. She greets loads of visitors at the Maritime Museum Greenwich and loads of Chinese visitors amongst them. She has asthma and COPD but does really well until she gets an infection. She was telling me she was searching everywhere for face masks. They are in high demand. If she can't find any, I guess I'll have to do my magic and send some to her.

My daughter in Seoul has movement restrictions (she's not allowed to leave her district in the city) in place and has to wear a mask all the time. She had to explain to her employer that it would be impossible to teach English spoken language to under-10s if they can't see her mouth.

I'm given to understand the mortality rate for Coronavirus is about 2.5% were as the mortality rate for virual pneumonia, also known as community acquired pneumonia is anything from 5 to 10%.
