What do users of Lightroom think...?
Is there any difference in the tone/contrast/blacks & whites adjustments which can be made in the Basic panel and those which can be made using the Tone Curve panel? Or is it just down to whichever method the user prefers to achieve the same result?

Yes there are differences but they are subtle. The basic panel controls how the raw data is mapped into the image space that the tone curve controls operates on. So I'd look at the tone curve as fine tuning.
