I have been offered a Contax G2 and 35-70 lens by a very good friend at a good price. I have used the Contax prime lenses and been extremely impressed. I have read reviews of the 35-70 lens and seem to get mixed opinions. I want to use the camera for travel shots and family holidays so really donb't want to carry several lenses. I appreciate that the zoom is unlikely to match the primes in terms of overall speed and quality but would welcome views from anyone who has used this lens.
AFAIK only one of us has even used the G2, and he don't have it no more. Sorry. AP did review it, but I can't recall what they said, or even when it appeared. You could find the review at Oldtimer Cameras web site. Could your mate not lend you the combo for a test? Tim CRIPN …don't follow leaders, watch the parking meters!
I don't think there are a lot of G2 owners here, Dave. You might be better off searching the web for a specialist Contax forum. Huw Evans. www.huwevans.freeuk.com
It was Fangey that had the G2, wasn't it? No point in asking him now, he won't be out of his coffin for another couple of hours! Dunno if he even had the 35/70 on it. We're not much use really, are we! [frown} Big(Useless as tits on a boar!)Will <font color=blue>Someday Jeri Ryan will weaken!<font color=black>
Did someone say something? Yes - I had a Contax G2 - but only primes - 21, 28, 35, 45, and 90. I once read an article by a chap who had the G2 and just the 35-70 for travel, and he was very pleased with the combination, though I personally would probably add a 28 to it as well.
I read the AP article which was a reader review of the 35-70 during his trip to China. He said the overall performance was very good, and quality was comparable to the primes, the only disadvantages was the slow speed and minimum focus distance which was about 1m.
....sounds about par for the course for a zoom really! Any zoom will ultimately be a SLIGHT compromise "optically" when compared to a fixed focal lenght. At the end of the day it is whether you are prepared to accept that "slight optical compromise" compared to the versatility of the zoom? Be assured however that there are no really "bad" zooms nowadays (as long as you exclude obvious cheap crap) so use your 35/70 with confidence say I and reap the benefit of the added convenience. Yup. There are also some good zooms that are bette than the comparable primes from the same manufacturer - although that's much rarer! Nick BSRIPN
