"This raises the question, do we really value "good old fasioned customer service" or are we prepared to sacrifice it for the sake of a price advantage which only the large stores can offer?"

I shall put my 2 cents in before reading all the posts and say:
    >> I believe that it is a '6 of one and 1/2 dozen of the other'
situation. You will find some extremely knowledgable people in
some of the 'box' or electronics stores and conversely you will
find some absolute dolts in the smaller independant stores.
I am applying the knowledge and customer service in the same context.<<

......of course it goes without saying that if Jack was my local retailer he would get all my custom! How could you resist such a charming fellow and if you absolutely HAVE to buy a photovest, whom better to buy it from! /img/wwwthreads/smile.gif

Depends on what I’m interested in buying. Generally, if it’s a ‘thing’ then I may be interested in having a look and a quick play with the item in question but for the most part I already know what I’m looking for so getting goods cheap is my priority. If having a small corner shop will give me extra expertise but higher prices then I’ll go for the cheap option every time.

If it’s services I’m buying though, anything from banking services to getting my prints printed, then I don’t mind paying a premium price to be able to talk to someone who really knows what they’re talking about.

I've just thought of another category actualy... I guess buying goods that I know I will need support for in the future would be another group. The only things I can think of that falls into this category are cars, bikes and computers. I’m not bad with general servicing on cars and bikes, but I wouldn’t trust any dealer to do a decent job on them anyway so once again I’d rather have cheap rather then paying over the odds for dubious after-care services. The same is true of computers. They either work or they don’t when they arrive, so they get sent back or they don’t, but once again I want cheap given that I can fix anything that subsequently goes wrong with them thereafter.

well this is true will,I bought s/h a cobra flashgun from them recently for a tenner and it still had 12 months gurantee on it!
I use them for d/p cos the other place round t corner is crap. Dunno where they send the prints but they come back with more white dots than a ngeative dalmation!

LOL less into selling oh come on. If you owned your own business would you seriously put out the signals that you don`t want to sell ? Business is about money i might not like it, you might not like it but its the way things are, wake up and smell the coffee.
