So camera manufacturers and trying to tempt people into buying more cameras. Drat, you've seen through their dastardly plans! Seriously though, in the early days of digital each successive generation of cameras saw remarkable advances in features and image quality, but the innovation curve has levelled off now. Image quality has got as good as it needs to be for most people, focusing and frame rates are fast enough, and changes now are only incremental. Still, we're all on this merry-go-round of annual updates (not just for cameras but all tech – just look at the annual iPhone circus) and it must be getting increasingly difficult for the designers to keep coming up with new ideas to get people to buy stuff. Remember, our society is so structured now that if everyone stopped consuming it would a global economic catastrophe – recession, unemployment, and certainly no camera shops.
