I can see a certain mollusc trading in his D100 in the new year then! /img/wwwthreads/smile.gif

I wouldn't trade in my D100 - but if the results are of the anticipated quality it would be a nice camera for someone. Mmmmmmmmmmmmm

It'll have to be good to beat the Canon G3, but time will tell. All I can find out is that has traditional controls but is it auto-focus? Pity they haven't copied the swivelling LCD. /img/wwwthreads/frown.gif

    Anyway, Annies 'pulled' again.

Blimey - here we have Slimey questioning if a Leica is as good as a Canon! The world is turned upside down.

It's autofocus Brian. (Had to look here because Leica omitted to provide such simple information on their website!) <a href=http://www.digitalkamera.de/kameras/Daten-en.asp?Cam=LeicaDigilux2&CustID=3173 target=_new>Leica Digilux 2 specs here<a>

Clearly though the camera has been designed for ease of use as a manual focus camera as well because it features a magnifier in the viewfinder plus traditional zooming, focusing and aperture control rings for just such a purpose.

Oh well, time will reveal all. Now, why the hell didn't they fit an M mount?

Why indeed Brian! I think most Leica users would have forgone the dubious "luxury" of autofocus for the inclusion of an M mount. I know it's (equivalent to 35mm) 28/90 focal length lens will suffice for most purposes but it would have been nice to at least have had the option of fitting something a little wider occasionally and for making use of the existing range of superb Leica optics.

BECAUSE for the 1,000,000th time (not just here, but elsewhere) the design of Leica M lenses is unsuitable for digital chips - the rays at the edge are pretty steeply angled. Especially with the wides. Which would lead to lousy quality. Which makes the whole idea pointless.

You've had a terrible effect on old slimey you know Geoff. What with him buying Canons, actually getting to like his multimode AF Nikon D100................the next thing you know he'll be putting tonic in his gin!/img/wwwthreads/smile.gif

Well at least I don't stutter Will. And the GIT from Co Durham better keep quiet before I reveal a rather awful truth.

    P.S. What's multi mode?

Go on Bri, dish the dirt on the Co.Durham git! My lips are sealed and you know it won't go any further than the few million people who surf the internet. It's got nothing to do with a sheep has it, or even worse, he's been seen with his nose pressed up against the Leica shop window with a longing look in his eye? Go on Bri, I can take it!

    BigWill

P.S. Sorry about the stutter, had a "premature epostulation"

Thought I'd post another snap. For a short time last week we were a three TVR family. Now buying one is an understandable mistake, but three!!!!!!

How the bloody hell did you end up with three of them! Did you leave them alone in the garage and they bred!

How did one achive that "floating on an ethereal cloud of TVR exhaust fumes" effect? You been fiddling in photoshop again haven't you! You'll go blind you know!

    huwevans Not Really Here

That is indeed the general reason why a digital camera with an M-mount would be a waste of good lenses, but in this case I think it is even more simple than that. According to the specifications Will tracked down, this digicam is to have a 2/3" sized sensor. Sounds a decent size, doesn't it? But unfortunately, for reasons that now seem to be lost in the mists of time, digital sensor size designations follow the rather antiquated Cathode Ray Tube measurements of many decades ago, where a particular size of picture required a much larger diameter CRT, and the stated measurement refers to the diameter of this now hypothetical tube.

For a 2/3" CCD the actual sensor size (in 4:3 aspect ratio) is about 8.8mm by 6.6mm. Accordingly this chip would occupy only a very tiny portion of the field of any lens designed for a 35mm camera system, and certainly needs its own specially designed lens(es).
