Over £10,000 of prizes to be won in Amateur Photographer of the Year 2019

Now in its 28th year, the Amateur Photographer of the Year (APOY) competition is the first of its kind and – we believe – the best. With a wide variety of categories, there’s something to appeal to everyone. You might choose to enter just one category, or – like last year’s winner, Neil Burnell – you might set yourself a year-long project and create an entry for all eight rounds, with the big prize and title Amateur Photographer of the Year as the overall aim.

It’s open to all amateur photographers*, and once again we have teamed up with Photocrowd, who will be hosting the competition on a simple and intuitive platform. Not only will your work be seen by our panel of experienced judges, but it’s also a great way of getting your work in front of a wider audience. In 2018 more than 470,000 votes were cast by Photocrowd members across the duration of the competition.

Providing an amazing £10,000 worth of prizes once more is Sigma Imaging (UK). However, this year, there’s a slight change. The winner of each round can choose what they like from Sigma’s wide-ranging products, up to a total of £1,000 (based on Sigma’s suggested retail price). The overall winner has £2,000 to spend on Sigma products of their choice. Whether you shoot APS-C or full frame, prefer a wide angle zoom or a telephoto prime, there will be something for you.

In addition, each category’s Crowd Vote winner (the image that receives most votes from Photocrowd members) wins a one-year digital subscription to Amateur Photographer.

The UK’s oldest and most prestigious photo competition for amateur photographers returns, and this year we have some new categories to test your creative and technical skills.

*For the purposes of the competition, the definition ‘amateur’ refers to a person who earns 10% or less of their annual income from photography or photographic services.

The lucky winner will then be crowned the Amateur Photographer of the Year 2019.
