APOY 2013 Competition Results Round Eight – Wideangle World
AP readers really excelled
themselves in round 8 of APOY 2013, as we reveal the top 30 photographs from
our Wideangle World round
John Hall, from County Cork in Ireland, is the winner of our Wideangle
World round of APOY 2013. John will receive a Panasonic Lumix DMC-G5 with Lumix
G Vario 7-14mm f/4 Asph lens, worth a total of £1,749.98. The G5 is a digital
single-lens mirrorless camera with a 16.05-million-pixel, micro four thirds,
Live MOS sensor. It has 6fps high-speed continuous shooting, a 3in, 920,000-dot
articulated LCD touchscreen and a 1.44-million-dot EVF. The compact and
lightweight Lumix G Vario 7-14mm f/4 Asph is an ultra-wideangle zoom lens
(14-28mm equivalent) with a 114∞ angle of view.
Our second-placed winner is Ferdinand von Korff, from County Wicklow in
Ireland, who will receive a Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ40, worth £329.99. The
18.1-million-pixel TZ40 has a High Sensitivity MOS sensor and Venus Engine, and
incorporates a 24mm ultra-wideangle 20x optical zoom Leica DC Vario-Elmar lens
(24-480mm equivalent). Wi-Fi connectivity and NFC technology are included.
Bruce
Marshall, from Belfast in Northern Ireland, finished third in the round and
wins a Panasonic Lumix DMX-SZ3 worth £119.99. The slimline 16.1-million-pixel
SZ3 compact has a 25mm ultra-wideangle Leica DC Vario-Elmar lens with powerful
10x optical zoom (25-250mm equivalent).

Judges say: ‘Wideangle lenses have many applications. They can be used
to give you a greater scope of the scene or even to employ the strange
distortion effects. Here, though, John has used his lens to convey the awesome
scale of this derelict ship found in Baltray, County Louth. Everything works
here – the light, the angle, the subject. Even the rust is a fantastic detail.

Judges
say: ‘Photography can transport us to places we may never visit or make us part
of events we may never experience. Here we find ourselves in the great outdoors
herding sheep in Georgia. The decision to shoot from horseback is a stroke of
brilliance. The wideangle lens means that we also have the crucial element of
the horse’s head and the sweeping vista.’

say: ‘This is a fantastic example of what can be achieved with the right lens
and the right scene. Bruce found this image after days of heavy rain caused
flooding. By using a wide lens he has been able to capture the stunning leading
lines of the trees, the verdant foliage and even a jogger out for a morning
run. The painterly light caps it all off.’
