Martin Ellis, 52, from Gateshead, triumphed in the contest, which was organised by wildlife photographer Cain Scrimgeour and The Sill, a joint partnership between Northumberland National Park Authority and the YHA.

Martin, who won a one-to-one photography workshop with Cain as his prize, said: ‘Seeing Batailshiel Haugh and the Usway Burn bathed in the late evening sun was something special – just a brief moment.’

Runners up were Philip Whittaker and Anita Nicholson.

Entries ranged from lush landscapes in the Kielder to roe deer.
