Nikon will neither confirm or deny reports that it is planning to launch a new professional digital SLR called the D3x.

Speculation emerged after photographers noticed that ‘D3x’ was mentioned in a recent firmware upgrade for its current flagship model the D3 (pictured).

Nikon withdrew update version 1.10 on 18 April, just three days after announcing it , telling users this was a result of ‘customer feedback’.

Asked whether the rumours are true, Nikon UK said in a statement: ‘Nikon strives to observe customers’ evolving needs and to develop suitable products for their requirements. However, Nikon is unable to comment on the development of any future products before their official announcement.’

Nikon tells us that it withdrew the firmware update after reported 'technical issues' and that this matter is not connected to rumours about a new camera.
