Leica Camera Group sales shot up 73% in nine months, boosted by strong demand for Leica M and S-system cameras, according to preliminary figures released by the German company.

Sales rose to €186.4 million for the nine months to 31 December 2010, compared to €107.6m for the same period in 2009.

Earnings before interest and taxes increased to Euros 28.9m for the quarter to 31 December 2010, from a loss of 0.3m a year earlier.

Leica said that group sales of €75.5m for the last three months of 2010 were the company’s best quarterly results since 1996.

A spokesman said the figures exceeded expectations. 'The crucial factor is the continuing strong demand for the Leica M-system, the professional S-system, compact cameras and Leica sport optics products.'
