Photographers take fight to Home Office

The fight for photographers' rights to take pictures in public unchallenged by police has moved up a gear.

Labour MP Austin Mitchell is set to take a 'delegation' of photographers to the Home Office, according to journalists' trade publication Press Gazette.

The move comes after Mitchell wins backing from 131 MPs for his Early Day Motion (EDM) on the subject tabled in the House of Commons last month.

The EDM canvasses the support of fellow politicians after growing reports of police stopping photographers – amateur and professional - taking pictures in public areas.

In February police launched a new nationwide anti-terrorism publicity campaign, alerting the public to people with cameras behaving suspiciously.

Mitchell's office had yet to comment on the planned protest at the time of writing.
