Nikon phases out D40 DSLR camera

Nikon has finally discontinued its D40 digital SLR, one of its most successful and longest-serving digital cameras.
The 6.1-million-pixel DSLR first saw the light of day in November 2006.
Its production span of more than two years is almost unheard of in today's digital camera industry.
Billed as Nikon's smallest and lightest DSLR, the 475g model was 65g lighter than its predecessor, the D50.
At its launch, Nikon promoted its 'intuitive controls and ergonomically designed operation that even first-time SLR users [will] feel comfortable with'.
A Nikon UK spokeswoman today told us that the lower end of the consumer DSLR range is well catered for by the 10.2MP Nikon D60 - which was launched last year - and the D5000, a 12.3MP model unveiled earlier this week.
The D40 was launched on to the UK high street in December 2006.
