Canon will next month launch a new flagship G-series digital compact camera to replace the PowerShot G9.

Aimed at photo enthusiasts and professionals seeking a back-up camera, the PowerShot G10 is due out next month priced £499.99.

The 14.7-million-pixel model will feature a lens delivering the 35mm viewing angle equivalent of a 28-140mm lens. The 11-element-in-9-group optic includes a double-sided aspherical element.

The G10 features a Digic 4 processing engine, as used in the EOS 50D and 5D Mark II digital SLRs.

Also on aboard is a raw shooting option compatible with Canon's Digital Photo Professional imaging software.

The G10 boasts a new 'i-Contrast' feature designed to increase dynamic range in images. The firm claims this 'brings out previously unnoticed detail in dark areas like shadows - without blowing out lighter areas'.

The on-board 3in PureColor LCD has a claimed resolution of 461,000 dots.

Also new is a dedicated Exposure Compensation dial and dual ISO/shooting mode dial.

The G10 will be compatible with Canon's Macro Ring Lite and Macro Twin Lite flash.
