Amateur photographers: Getty wants your images

Amateur photographers using the image sharing website Flickr are being urged to submit a 'portfolio' to Getty Images for the chance to sell their pictures through the agency.

The move comes a year after Getty first launched Flickr Collection, which now contains nearly 60,000 photos captured by Flickr members, many of which have been sold to Getty's clients.

'To make a submission, Flickr members should post a "portfolio" of exactly 10 photos showcasing what they feel is their best work,' said a Getty Images spokeswoman.

Getty Images says its editors will then evaluate the photos based on 'style, subject matter and technical skill'.

The successful applicants will receive an invitation to join Getty Images' Flickr program.

Until now Flickr users could only indicate they wished their photos to be considered, by flagging this up via their Flickr account settings.

Now it appears Getty wants to make the process more clear cut.

So, it has set up a 'Call for Artist' group on the Flickr website.

When Getty first announced the project it was unclear whether amateurs would end up getting as much as the agency's regular professional photographers.

Getty later told us that amateurs' photos would be licensed at the same prices as its other RM (rights managed) and RF (royalty-free) collections.
