Magnum's Martin Parr 'nearly arrested'

Wednesday 14th February 2007

Chris Cheesman

Legendary Magnum photographer Martin Parr says he was almost arrested on a Brazilian beach when a father took exception to an image that included one of his children in the shot.
'The beach of Copacabana would be a delight to photograph on if you could walk around with an invisible camera,' said Parr who is on a tour of South American beach resorts.
Writing in Magnum Photos' new internet forum, Magnum Blog, Parr added: 'If you have a biggish camera you have to watch every step. I was nearly arrested because a father took exception to the fact that one of his children was in the background of a shot I had taken.'
Parr said he has encountered no such problem on beaches in Chile where he travelled to following his trip to the Copacabana beach in Rio de Janeiro.
The Magnum Blog website aims to allow photographers to discuss photography and photojournalism and to 'illuminate the stories behind the images'.
