Sony says that its previously announced FE 70-200mm f/2.8 G Master zoom for its Alpha 7 series full-frame mirrorless compact system cameras will be available in July, and cost around £2,500. Meanwhile the 2x and 1.4x teleconverters announced at the same time will also hit the shops in July, and cost £550 each.
The lens and teleconverters are all in Sony’s premium G Master range, designed to give uncompromising optical quality on high-resolution sensors. They are dust and water-resistent for use in poor weather.
Sony has employed an optical design of 23 elements in 18 groups for the 70-200mm f/2.8 lens, including an extreme aspherical (XA) element with 0.01micron manufacturing precision, In effect, this means the element has a much smoother surface compared to conventional aspheric manufacturing techniques, which Sony suggests should give much-improved bokeh, with no ‘onion-ring’ effect. In addition, there are two conventional aspheric elements, two Super ED glass elements and four ED glass elements to minimse chromatic aberrations. Autofocus uses a ring drive SSM to drive the main focus group towards the front of the lens, along with a double linear motor for moving the rear group.
