Operated by CeWe, which runs Jessops photo-finishing business, the service also digitises cine film and video, for storage of DVD, Blue-ray disc or USB, and includes a photo restoration service.
The service, called Photo Legacy, was available to Jessops customers before the chain went into administration under former owners but has been updated to allow users access to images over a cloud-based storage system.
Also new, explained a CeWe spokesperson, is that all work is now carried out in the UK whereas, before, all prints and films were despatched to Germany.
CeWe’s marketing manager Sarah Brockhurst said: ‘Thousands of consumers have boxes of old photos, slides or tapes holding treasured memories stored in cupboards and lofts gathering dust.
‘This new service enables these precious items to be brought into the modern world and enjoyed by families and friends for years to come.’
It costs £35 to scan up to 50 slides or negatives and £25 for up to 50 prints, for example.
CeWe says it will return the original media to customers, along with their digital images.
The service is available through Jessops stores and selected Boots shops that have their own photographic department.
