Police last night arrested a 46-year-old man in connection with their ongoing investigations into an incident involving a paparazzi photographer who was allegedly assaulted by the actor Hugh Grant on Tuesday.

Grant, the star of films such as Four Weddings and a Funeral, was yesterday reported to have lashed out at photographer Ian Whittaker who accused him of attacking him with a tub of baked beans.

A Metropolitan police spokeswoman confirmed to Amateur Photographer magazine this morning: ?On 25 April at 7.30pm a 46-year-old man was arrested in connection with the inquiry and taken to a central London police station and he has now been bailed.?

She added: ?Kensington CID is investigating an allegation of assault on a 43-year-old man following an incident in Redcliffe Road, SW10 at 10am on 24 April.?

The police spokeswoman refused to confirm the names of the parties involved in the incident.
