Nikon UK has confirmed the launch of a new general purpose VR (Vibration Reduction) lens aimed at entry-level digital SLR users.

Billed as ?compact and lightweight? – and costing £179.99 – the AF-S DX Nikkor 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G includes VR technology designed to deliver enhanced low-light performance by minimising the effects of camera shake.

Nikon claims the lens allows shutter speeds of ?up to three stops slower than would be possible without VR?.

?The versatile 3x zoom lens covers the widely-used and popular focal range of 27mm to 82.5mm when mounted on any DX-format Nikon digital SLR camera [in 35mm viewing angle terms],? adds the firm.

Also on board the 265g newcomer is Nikon?s Silent Wave Motor aimed at enabling fast, quiet autofocus operation.

The lens is due out in the UK at the end of November.
