Kodak has announced what it claims is ?groundbreaking? image sensor technology that increases sensitivity to light by up to 4x.

The new sensor layout adds panchromatic pixels to the red, green and blue elements that form the traditional Bayer Pattern arrangement, according to a statement released by the company?s US office today.

?Since these pixels are sensitive to all wavelengths of visible light, they collect a significantly higher proportion of light striking the sensor,? claims Kodak.

Kodak has already begun developing CMOS sensors using this technology for consumer products such as digital still cameras and camera phones.
