Canon has confirmed the factual accuracy of a press article which stated that the digital camera market may shrink in 2009.

Earlier today we reported that digital camera heavyweights Canon and Nikon have been hit by the global economic slowdown, according to press reports.

Reuters reported that Canon’s president, Tsuneji Uchida, had stated that the economic slowdown had begun to hit sales of digital SLR cameras.

A spokeswoman for Canon UK has since confirmed to Amateur Photographer: ‘Mr Uchida did have an interview with Reuters on Friday. The contents [of the interview], which are on the Reuters website, are correct.’

Nikon has yet to comment on a story published by The Bangkok Post that it is laying off 1,500 subcontracted staff at a factory in Thailand.
