An amateur photographer has won the Icon category of the Wanderlust Travel Photo of the Year with a picture shot while on holiday in the West Country.

Belgian tourist Bart Heirweg took the title with a photo of Corfe Castle in Dorset shrouded in mist.

‘It was a sight I will never forget,’ said Bart, a web developer who lives in Ghent.

Bart wins a photographic commission to Ecuador, plus a Nikon camera.

Judges applauded the ‘high standard’ of this year’s amateur entries.

‘You would think most of them are professional,’ said Wanderlust magazine Editor-in-Chief Lyn Hughes who added: ‘There was particularly tough competition in the People category this year.’

Meanwhile, James Appleton – a ‘semi-pro’ – won a Highly Commended in the Portfolio category, a section also open to professionals.

However, there was no winner in this category as judges felt the standard was not a high enough standard.

This means that the £1,800 collected in entry fees will be donated to the Haiti Relief Fund, according to a Wanderlust spokesman.
