An AP reader was among the photographers who made the most of the chance to capture the rare appearance of the Northern Lights over parts of the UK last night.

Robin Scott posted his photos from the Ayrshire coast on Amateur Photographer‘s Facebook page (above), saying: ‘Pity the clouds had rolled in and covered the main structure but happy all the same.’

The Aurora Borealis was also visible in areas including Norfolk, south Wales, Gloucestershire and Essex.
