A former Russian pilot who only took up photography when he retired has won a global competition that was open to amateurs and professionals alike.

Alexander Svistunov won with this image, entered into a category called Hearing.

Alexander Svistunov, 66, beat more than 37,000 entrants to win the Metro Photo Challenge, a contest organised by a newspaper published in 100 cities worldwide.

Judge Alejandro Cartagena praised the spontaneity of Alexander’s shot, which triumphed over 120,000 submissions.

‘The framing is right on the spot and the photographer has managed to make this simple act of playing an instrument a joy to look at,’ he said.

Meanwhile, Dominika Wypych, 34, from Sweden won the grand prize in a category that was subject to a public vote.

Both win an eight-day trip to Ghana for a ‘life-changing photo expedition’, in a project run in association with Reach for Change – an organisation that aims to improve the lives of young people.
