Understanding raw
I can’t recommend a single book that will tell you all you want to know, but as a first step I suggest you go to your local bookshop, find the section on digital photography, then look in the index of each book under ‘r’ for ‘raw’ to see what it contains about raw imaging.
However, if you are using Adobe Photoshop or Elements, there are two specific books on raw imaging that I can recommend. The first is Camera Raw with Photoshop for Dummies by Kevin L Moss, published by John Wiley & Sons (ISBN 978-0471774822). The Dummies range of books is well known for being very clear and concise and written in an easy-to-understand language.
The second, more comprehensive book, is The Complete Raw Workflow Guide by Philip Andrews and is published by Focal Press (ISBN 978-0240810270). This covers how to convert and edit raw files in Adobe Photoshop, Elements and Lightroom, as well as explaining exactly what a raw file is and how it is produced.
Both titles should be available from larger book stores and online at a range of outlets.
