    Various statements have been made on the Forums, mostly around equipment, about professional & amateur photographers and the similarities or differences between them.

    From the vid, you may have noticed the v.old Hasselblad & v.v. old lens being used by Ray, albeit with digital back attached to the camera body.

    Equally importantly, did you notice the collaborative aspects of a pro photographer and the team involved in that particular advertising shoot? Much of pro photography is collaborative: it involves others, unlike amateur photography which is generally a solo activity, albeit possibly done in the company of others before, during or afterwards at the Camera Club. Even the solo pro still-life photographer, slaving away for days alone in his or her black surfaced, darkened, den, may rely on model makers, set builders and retouchers (even in the days of film) and others to do their work in keeping their client happy.

    Professional photography is a broad church, and generalizations are dangerous to the point of meaningless. Some photographers work alone, especially photojournalists though I have known a few advertising photographers who work alone too, including a specialist in glassware and a specialist in photographing petrol stations (some really are very specialized). Some work with one, two or even three assistants, whether they are specialists in weddings or advertising or anywhere else assistants are useful. A few, mostly in advertising, have huge production teams.

    Likewise, they use a huge range of cameras, though it's rather narrower now than it was when everyone used film all the time.

    Well that's a wonderful generalisation from you!

    DANGER: 1. full of risk; causing peril, hazardous or unsafe. 2. able or likely to cause physical injury; distress, harm.
    GENERALISATION: a general statement or concept obtained by inference from specific cases.

    I think my generalisation is better and less dangerous than your generalisation :D and much less likely to cause harm or distress. It is also not really hazardous or unsafe because what can be seen in the video is repeated in hundreds of studios and outdoors, in London alone, every day. If you had read my post carefully, you will also see that I made reference to the lone photographer, the 'sole practitioner' and how, sometimes, depending on their work, they may need to collaborate with and use the services or support of others. But others do not. Your glassware specialist is the sort of photographer I had in mind.

    For another example, the apparent solo freelance photographer in a hazardous news situation, if they are on 'a guarantee' (of placing their pictures in the paper or magazine) will enjoy a measure of support and may need to collaborate with the Picture Desk to get the job done or be rescued in the event of trouble.

    The point about Ray's camera & lens, that I hoped Forumistas might notice, was that it was old. It is actually several generations old but it works for him. Why upgrade it? Well, a new one's going to be better, some/many/most amateurs {note the careful generalisation} will be thinking or led to think by camera companies. It does the job. It works for him. So Ray keeps it working.

    Here comes the generalisation (get ready to duck, Roger!): most pros and some amateurs (usually at the serious end of the spectrum), when they find a bit of kit that does what they want it to, day in day out, tend to hang on to it and keep it. Bit like you and that 10x8 lens ... ;).

    When I tried to open the URL you shared it says " We couldn't find the webpage you requested" I don't know how is it going to work for me, I mean it sounds interesting.

    Hi Isabella, unfortunately it looks as though it has been taken off Ray's w/s. It was a short film about shooting the Ecclestiastical Life ads and showed collaboration between photographer, model, designer/art director and make up artist. If you go to Ray's web-site you can still see some stills. Look for/click on Still Life/Hands in the drop down. Cheers, Oly

    PS. If you click Moving Image there are three vids there that support my points for this Thread. 'Old gear that does the Job' & 'Collaboration'.
    About time I added another one to the series. Shall have to hunt something out.

    A good example of this is the late great Jane Bown, using only available light and her beloved om1 she produced some of the most outstanding portraits of the last 4 decades and saw no good reason for moving to digital
